July 2026

25 Jul 2026
Last year, Stephen Miller described citizens utilizing their First Amendment rights as “elderly white hippies.”
After over a year of nonviolent, peaceful protest, we “elderly white hippies” have been active:
  • collecting food, clothing, personal hygiene items, and school supplies for our community;
  • providing voter information and registration;
  • participating in get-out-the-vote activities
– all lawful, constitutionally protected activities. Now the administration calls us “communists,” “radical left terrorists,” and “domestic terrorists.”
Obviously, our actions speak louder than their words.
This administration says one thing and does another. ICE has adopted methods and routine tactics that frequently lead to serious civil rights violations, injuries, and deaths – all in violation of the 5th Amendment. This amendment is law. It states that “no PERSON shall be deprived” … of due process. The government must follow fair and equal rules before it can take away a person's life, freedom, or property. Yet, ICE continues to commit acts of violence at a scale and severity without precedent.
Meanwhile, hundreds of peaceful vigils have taken place and are taking place today to mourn those taken from us by the brutal actions of ICE. We the People have First Amendment rights to act peacefully – to protest – to petition – to assemble and demand accountability from our government officials.
We reject all forms of political violence and intimidation, no matter the source or the target. Nonviolence does not mean backing down. It means standing firm in our values, channeling our anger and our hope into action, and refusing to become what we are fighting against.
Vigilance. Resistance. PERSISTANCE!

Yesterday, July 17, was the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’ passing, and people across the country are standing up in defense of our democracy and carrying forward his legacy of Good Trouble.
Good Trouble Lives On is a national day of nonviolent action to respond to the attacks posed on our civil and human rights by the current administration and to remind them that, in America, the power lies with the people.
This is more than a protest; it’s a moral reckoning. A continuation of the movement Lewis helped lead, and a new front in the struggle for freedom.
“Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.” - John Lewis
  • All people deserve equal access to resources, opportunities, and privileges. All people means ALL PEOPLE, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion or ability.
  • Change requires action. Importantly, activism isn’t just angry opposition to the kind of world you don’t want - it is also loving support of what kind of world you DO want. We must all use our voices and our privilege to advocate for the causes that matter most. We must peacefully resist harm to our communities.
  • Get involved! Robust civic engagement means that people take an active role in shaping the policies and governance that impacts their daily life.
  • Live by example! Hold your beliefs and your head high! Now is not the time to sit quietly while those who disagree with you hold the floor. It is time to be vocal and visible, and let those around you know where you stand.
“A democracy cannot thrive where power remains unchecked and justice is reserved for a select few.” -John Lewis
Vigilance. Resistance. Persistence.

Happy Fourth. of July! What a great celebration – Voter Registration

– picnic provided by Tim and Carole
 – music by Firepit, Leo, and “The Drummer.”
I cannot think of a better way to celebrate our Independence than to join with other Americans to breathe life into the rights for which our Forefathers fought so valiantly.
And there is more … 82 years after the Declaration of Independence – 1858 - Abraham Lincoln spoke these words in Chicago, IL:
“We hold this annual celebration to remind ourselves of all the good done in this process of time of how it was done and who did it, and how we are historically connected with it; and we go from these meetings in better humor with ourselves - we feel more attached the one to the other, and more firmly bound to the country we inhabit.
But after we have done all this, we have not yet reached the whole. There is something else connected with it… men (*immigrants) - or those whose ancestors have come hither and settled here, finding themselves our equals in all things. … These men say that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” and they have a right to claim it as though they were flesh of the flesh of the men who wrote that Declaration and so THEY ARE.
That is the electric cord in that Declaration that links the hearts of patriotic and liberty-loving men together, that will link those patriotic hearts as long as the love of freedom exists in the minds of men throughout the world…
I should like to know if taking this old Declaration of Independence, which declares that all men are equal upon principle and making exceptions to it where will it stop. If one man says it does not mean a negro, why not another say it does not mean some other man? …Let us stick to it, let us stand firmly by it.”
250 years later, The Declaration of Independence is still pertinent today! It put our nation on the path leading – eventually - to our Constitution. Our founding documents are not just vague ideals. They are practical principles that embody the highest aspirations of humanity. They serve as the basis for all that is positive in civic life. We, like our founding fathers, pledge to support ALL of U.S.!

February 2026

28 Feb 2026
Terrible start this morning … the first thing Dave said to me this morning was, “I turned off the news, I can’t stand it. He bombed Iran.” I replied, “**!!@&$!”
Two days ago, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who led his country's delegation in the high-stakes nuclear talks in Geneva said "good progress" had been made and while there had been agreement on some issues, differences remained on others. He said more negotiations would happen in less than a week. There had been no official reaction from the US.
Obviously the” official US reaction” was to bomb Iran. Why didn’t #47 work with his Board of Peace?
Lie #1: "It's time for peace."- Trump
The Board of Peace was launched in Washington on February 19, 2026. #47 convened the inaugural meeting of his newly formed Board of Peace at the U.S. Institute of Peace headquarters, a building that now bears his name. Its stated aims are to stabilize the Middle East region, with ambitions to address global conflicts as an alternative to the U.N.. #47 also said it would investigate "hotspots" around the world. I guess #47 was bored and needed a “hotspot.” He created a “hotspot” even though talks with Iran were ongoing – it was his choice to commit an act of war.
Meanwhile, at least 80 people including school children have been KILLED … so far.
Lie #2: Trump has pledged to deport “the worst of the worst.”
During his 2024 campaign and second term, Donald Trump frequently promised that his administration's deportation efforts would focus on removing the "worst of the worst"- criminals, gang members, and murderers.
However, investigations and data analyses from 2025–2026, including reports from the Cato Institute and Transactional Records Clearinghouse (TRAC), suggested that in some periods, over 40% to 92% of those detained had no criminal record at all. Over 50 people have DIED in ICE or Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody during the current administration. Two people were also shot and KILLED by agents.

If it wasn’t for my fellow “Beach” people joining together every Saturday for “sign waving” and good conversation, I would sink into a deep depression fueled by frustration. Instead, we register voters, sign candidate petitions, and collect food and personal hygiene items for community members in need. We will not be silent.
Vigilance. Resistance. PERSISTANCE!

Another great Sign Waving Saturday! I don’t know if Stephen Colbert’s interview with Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico, who confronted Christian Nationalism, had anything to do with the three Christians who I met today but there were new faces and more free speech. One man talked with me about Trump and the Book of Revelations, and he gave me some reading material.  Another man (I didn’t get a picture of his sign) wanted to call people to “Jesus” and to love one another. The third, a woman, wanted to proclaim that “Diversity is God’s Idea.” We welcome them, and their messages. Every “sign waving” participant expresses their thoughts, ideas, and opinions as protected by the First Amendment.
Sidebar: I was heartened to see there was a March for Peace and Dignity in the Quad Cities, from Illinois across the bridge to Iowa in winter weather! “Love thy Neighbor” “Welcome the Stranger” – a peaceful, moving meditation – I salute you!
The positive news continues - More “young” people are joining us! I conversed with a young man and learned about his manga pirate flag - One Piece.  The One Piece pirate flag, featuring a skull and straw hat, emerged in 2025 as a global Gen Z symbol of anti-corruption and anti-authoritarian protest. Representing themes of freedom, rebellion against oppressive systems, and "Straw Hat" solidarity, it has appeared in demonstrations in Indonesia, Nepal, Madagascar, France, Peru, the USA and right here in Neptune Beach, Florida. Welcome!
My signs were inspired by the continuing efforts of #47 to put partisan pressure on our military. Last week at Fort Bragg, North Carolina he told troops, “You have to vote for us.” (More instances of his partisanship pressure are listed in the comments.) It is evident Trump is not familiar with the Army Field manual: “The Army as an institution must be nonpartisan and appear so too. Nonpartisanship assures the public that our Army will always serve the Constitution and our people with loyalty and responsibility.”
“There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty.” John Adams, Diary entry, Spring 1772.

 14 Feb 2026

Happy Valentine’s Day! My signs this week were inspired by Valentine’s Day, my favorite Patti Smith song, “People have the Power”, and the U. S. Constitution (of course!).
It was as a “Choose-Your-Own-Path” kind of week. We experienced two distinctive and diverse paths in life that converged in Washington D. C. One was the Walk for Peace in support of lovingkindness and peace throughout the world. The other path led to a Congressional hearing. There the Attorney General answered each question by referring to a binder full of prepared insults - the “Bondi Binder.” She was clearly on another path, a path of incompetence and insult. I can’t think of any other example that demonstrates the essence of the divide in our country today.
During the Walk for Peace, the Buddhist monks experienced many encounters with “Christians” who used insulting language and held signs that read “you’re gonna burn in hell.” The monks could’ve continued walking and ignored the “Christians,” but they stopped. The monks were not silent. Neither did they refer to a “Bondi Binder” of insults. Instead, they calmly explained they were assembled, walking together, as a moving petition for peace and lovingkindness. Then they moved on - they persisted, step-by-step.
After 2300 miles, the monks were greeted in D. C. with large crowds, flowers, and friendly voices - "Thank you!” - “We love you!” - “Peace be with you!”
Today, and every day, we can walk in peace. We don’t need to take the “Bondi Binder” path of hate, nor do we need to ignore injustice in silence. We can speak, assemble, and petition for a government that upholds the Constitutional and Human Rights of ALL people. We can take the path of nonviolent resistance.
Vigilance. Resistance. Persistence.

Postscript:
Counter "Protester" - Actually the arrow looks like it is pointing to him!
Obviously, this counter protester is following the “Bondi Binder” path - while lounging! Nothing on the sign about the Constitution or current events, just an insult. We are taking another path ... keep-on-keeping on!

7 Feb 2026

Today 100+ people stood together for community “sign waving” - BONUS many young people are participating! A Registrar was on hand to handle Voter Registration and answer questions.

Also joining us was Rachel Grage. She was collecting signatures for her Candidate Petition to run against Republication Representative Rutherford (he who refuses to hold public meetings!!!). I foresee a Grage for Congress sign in my future.
I stood with my first-ever sign and my favorite sign.  They define my major “gripe” with 47 and his supporters. (Basic decency and humane treatment of ALL people - are my paramount issues). Not only does 47 think the Declaration of Independence is a "love letter" (!!?) but, when asked if he needed to uphold the Constitution as president, Trump answered, - “I don’t know.” But WE the People know. It’s your job! Read Article 2, Section 1, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution.
I also updated my sign about gerrymandering. 47 sued California over their voter approved redistricting and lost. Now he wants to “nationalize” elections in “15 states” (guess which states?!) But WE the People know better! Check out Article 1, Section 4, Clause 1 of the United States Constitution.
Still getting flipped off but also receiving many more supportive gestures compared to when I started with Neptune Beach Coalition 8 months ago. Plus, Firepit, Tim’s Bluetooth speaker, and the “Bongo Man” made for an excellent, musical morning.

Vigilance. Resistance. Persistence.

October 2025

25 Oct 2025

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” - 1st Amendment, United States Constitution

18 Oct 2025

“This is what democracy looks like! For our little beach community, turnout was fantastic!! During No Kings2 people enlivened the words of the 1st Amendment - in the form of their choice. Most held homemade signs, sang, chanted, some wore costumes and one man blew bubbles while children chased them.

I met many first-time-protesters (young and old), extremely frustrated Republicans, and friends. We chatted about opportunities for political activism while waving to a multitude of happy people honking horns. Only a couple vehicles with Trump and MAGA flags gave the finger and yelled obscenities. I gave them a peace sign while the young woman next to me yelled, “Jesus loves you anyway!”
… this is not the end - Vigilance. Resistance. Persistence.
“The people have the power to redeem the work of fools.
Upon the meek the graces shower,
It’s decreed, the people rule.
The people have the power!” - Patti Smith”

15 Oct 2025

“Visibility Brigade: This afternoon was my first Rush Hour Resistance.  On an I-95 pedestrian overpass, we literally stood with our messages posted on the overpass, waving at passing cars, reminding everyday people that they are not alone in these unprecedented times.
I couldn’t photograph our signs due to inaccessibility (after all this is an Interstate!) but I was able to capture some of the nonviolent messages we chalked on bridge as well as our American flags.

My favorite thing was listening to the honks (especially the semi-trucks!!) and seeing the waves as people drove under us. Speaker Johnson described us as “terrorists” but would terrorists culminate their activities with a group hug?”

11 Oct 2025

“It was a blustery day with some drizzle, yet my signs and I accomplished another Saturday protest!
Today was the last day of Banned Books Week. With the escalation in attempts to ban books in libraries, schools, and bookstores around the country, George Orwell’s cautionary tale "1984" serves as a prescient warning about the dangers of censorship.
The right to read belongs to all of us! Censorship has no place in American society. We must defend our rights, and we must not be so fearful that we silence ourselves.
Vigilance. Resistance. PERSISTANCE.”

“It has been a week! … from a bizarre rant from Hegseth and Trump’s 72 minute sleepwalk through a list of partisan gripes in front of our top military leaders … to ICE’s escalating military tactics causing chaos in Chicago - it is tempting to simply tune out the news. Many people readily admit, “I don’t follow the news, it’s too depressing.”
I agree, what is happening (particularly in Chicago!) is depressing. Yet, it is also important to be an informed citizen and that means being knowledgeable about what is going on. What to do to maintain some equilibrium?
My humble tips:
It is okay to limit your exposure and take regular breaks from the news.
Get summaries from authoritative, reliable sources like Heather Cox Richardson.
Take action. Channel your energy into positive action: donate, use 5calls.org to contact elected officials, volunteer, explore organizations that support your cause like turnoutpac.org, VoteVets.org, fiftyfifty.one, nokings.org, etc.
Finally, spend time with friends and family doing enjoyable activities. Engage in uplifting media!
Take a breath. While the news may not be “fun,” it is important. Being knowledgeable about political, social, and global issues enables us to participate actively and thoughtfully in a democratic society.
Vigilance. Resistance. PERSISTENCE!”
